What Is Colorectal Surgery?
Colorectal surgery in Singapore refers to a group of surgical procedures to repair damage to the colon, rectum, and anus as a result of various injuries or diseases.
The primary goal of these surgical procedures is to manage and treat diseases like colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticulitis while minimising the impact on the patient’s quality of life.
These surgeries aim to remove diseased tissue, restore normal function as much as possible, and prevent future complications. Colorectal doctors and surgeons in Singapore combine different techniques and comprehensive care to manage benign and serious conditions of the lower digestive tract.
Common Procedures For Colorectal Surgery In Singapore
The scope of colorectal surgeries in Singapore ranges from minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures to more extensive surgeries, depending on the severity and nature of the condition being treated.
Some of the common procedures Singapore colorectal surgeons and specialists perform include:
- Colectomy: This involves the surgical removal of part or the entire colon, often necessary for treating or preventing diseases affecting the colon.
- Colostomy: A colostomy creates an opening in the abdominal wall for stool to pass into a bag, used in situations where the lower bowel requires rest or removal.
- Haemorrhoidectomy: The surgical removal of haemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the lower part of the anus and rectum.
- Polypectomy: Removal of polyps from the colon’s inner lining. Polyps are usually benign but can sometimes develop into cancer.
- Rectal Prolapse Surgery: This surgery corrects a rectal prolapse, where the rectum slips outside of the anus.
- Anal Fistula Surgery: A procedure to repair an anal fistula, an abnormal tunnel between the anal canal and the perianal skin.
